History and campus
West High opened in 1890 as Salt Lake High School, which makes it the oldest public high school in Utah. The Panthers play in red and black. The school has long occupied its historic 1922 building on Salt Lake City’s Union Square, near the north end of downtown. A replacement building broke ground in 2026 and will move the campus across the street, keeping West rooted in the same near-downtown location it has held for generations.

West High draws from downtown, near-downtown, and west-side Salt Lake City neighborhoods, which can include Marmalade, Capitol Hill, the Guadalupe area, Fairpark, Rose Park, Poplar Grove, Glendale, and parts of the Avenues. The lines can shift over time, so confirm your exact boundary before you rely on a feeder. The Salt Lake City School District can verify the attendance area for any specific address.

A local broker’s take
If schools are steering your Salt Lake City search, the West boundary is worth a close look for two reasons. First, it is the only one of the district’s high schools with a full IB Diploma Programme, a genuine draw for buyers who want that track. Second, it spans a broader range of prices and neighborhoods than the east-side schools, from affordable west-side streets to near-downtown and Capitol Hill addresses, so there is room at more price points here. When you find a home you like, we will confirm its exact attendance area before you write an offer. Boundary lines rarely follow the streets you would expect.
